NCSA
The place to be for percussion performance
Percussion Studies

The percussion programs at the North Carolina School of the Arts are comprehensive curricula designed to provide maximum performance opportunities for students at all three levels of study. Unique to NCSA is a 2-week session of individual and group projects known as "Intensive Arts" held at the end of the first term. These workshops allow students to explore aspects of percussion and music outside the core curriculum. “Students’ individual performance activities have piano support from a team of pianists provided by the School of Music."
Bachelor of Music
Areas of concentrated work include, snare drum, keyboard instruments, timpani, and drum set. Students meet with John R. Beck several times each week for private lessons, master class, percussion ensemble, marimba band, and sectional coaching for the larger ensembles. Additional performance in Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, the School of the Arts Contemporary Chamber Ensemble (SACE), and informal student organized ensembles, offers percussionists the breadth of experience necessary for success in the music business.
Master of Music
Areas of concentrated work include, snare drum, keyboard instruments, timpani, and drum set, with a concentration on the student's particular area of interest. This program is designed to help percussion students focus on performance of specific styles of music and refine their skills for auditions and interviews. Graduate students are also enrolled in Career Enhancement Seminars which cover topics such as: Auditions, Recording and Web Page Design, Program Notes, Resume Writing, and Entrepreneurship in Music. Opportunities exist to perform outside school in several regional orchestras, and there are chances to "gig" on drum set.
Graduate Assistants are assigned performance, teaching, and conducting duties by John R. Beck.
High School Diploma
The High School Diploma is a college preparatory program whose focus is to prepare the student for college auditions as a music major. Areas of concentrated work include, snare drum, keyboard instruments, timpani, and drum set. A senior recital is recommended, but not required for completion of the diploma. High school students have the opportunity to perform alongside college students in percussion ensemble, orchestra, and wind ensemble, at the discretion of the faculty.
Facilities and Equipment Top quality instruments in great condition and minimal moving allow students more time to practice and rehearse.
